| Under
crystal clear blue skies, this event was held on July 21,
2001 at Sunday River Ski Resort, Newry, Maine to benefit the
Mahoosuc Arts Council.
The
competition was run over a 278 yard obstacle course beginning
with a run uphill over a dirt road, continuing through a field,
a 10-meter waist deep obstacle and then downhill over two
39" high log hurdles. Soft sand and grass made up most
of the relatively flat course. All of the contestants managed
to negotiate the obstacles which included two logs approximately
one meter (39 inches) high, the waist deep obstacle and a
hairpin curve with only a few mishaps in the water obstacle!
Each
contestant and his "wife" used a variety of
carrying techniques including the "piggy-back",
"fireman's carry" and the "Estonian carry".
Any technique used was acceptable as long as the "wife"
didn't touch the ground. The race was run in heats with two
teams starting together every two to three minutes.
The
winners for this year's event were Michael Toohey and
Nikki Freese of Harrison, Maine. Last year's winners, John
Suiter, III and Gale Guy, came in second this year. The Grand
Prize winners will attend the World Wife Carrying Championship
in Sonkjarva, Finland .
