With Raft Maine, the state's whitewater rafting trade association, headquartered in Bethel many people plan on a raft trip when visiting the area. But… whitewater rafting is 120 miles from Bethel. Raft Maine's offices are in Bethel because the association is one of my clients and this is where Gray Marketing proudly hangs out its shingle. Don't despair-here are a few tips in booking a raft trip if you're staying in Bethel.

1. The sun rises early and sets late in the summer so you won't be driving in the dark and you'll still have enough energy to drive home! I annually drive a group of Bethel ladies (the over 50 crowd!) to The Forks and back in one day.
   
   
2. Here are the back roads directions to shave miles and time otherwise you can take Route 2 east to Skowhegan and then 201 North to The Forks and your outfitter. Take Route 2 to Farmington, then Route 43 north to Route 148 to Anson, Route 201A to North Anson, cross the Kennebec to Route 201 in Solon and continue north on 201 to Bingham, Caratunk, The Forks or Jackman to your outfitter's base camp. Watch out for Moose!
   
   
3. Select an outfitter with a later morning check in and launch time - Adventure Bound, Magic Falls, Moxie, North American, Professional, Three Rivers and Windfall are good choices.
   
   
4. Check with Sun Valley Sports (207) 824-7533 or (877) 851-7533 on the Sunday River Road as they have a trip going every Wednesday (minimum 10 persons) that includes van transportation.
