Old Time
Fiddlers Contest |
As part of the Mollyockett Day celebration, the 4th
Annual Old Time Fiddlers Contest was held on Saturday, July 15, 2000
at the Gazebo on the Common in Bethel, Maine.
The purpose of
the Fiddlers Contest is to maintain the old-time tradition where the
fiddler is judged on his/her ability to produce toe-tapping music. The fiddlers
had the choice of playing with or without accompaniment, but the emphasis was
placed on old-time style and authenticity. Rhythm, clarity and expression were
also an important part of the judging.
Each fiddler must
register and enter in their own division, which consisted of
junior-junior, junior, senior and open and must play a waltz, tune of choice
and a hoedown. Each contestant was allowed four minutes to play their
selections and then was judged by the panel of three judges. No professional
fiddlers are allowed to compete in this contest.
Prizes ranged
from $20 to $100 for each category.
The Mahoosuc Arts
Council sponsored this event.
