Edmund S. Muskie Memorial Dedication

Under sunny and partly cloudy skies on a warm
August afternoon, Rumford and the State of Maine celebrated one of its most
famous citizens, Edmund S. Muskie by dedicating a memorial in his
honor. The granite monument memorial is at the Reflection Pool, in the park
along the banks of the Androscoggin in Rumford, Maine. Senator Muskie's widow,
Jane, his five children and seven grandchildren were in attendance along with
about 300 other people to commemorate this event.
The Muskie
Memorial Committee was recognized for their great work in making this event
such a success. The Committee consisted of: Co-Honorary Chairmen -
Senator George J. Mitchell - Shepard Lee; Chairman J. Harold McQuade; Richard
Allen; Wendall Broomhall; Thomas Carey; Edward Clohossey; Maine Senator Norman
Ferguson; Dee Holman; Fredric Kennard; Gabrielle LeVasseur; Jolene Lovejoy;
Mary Ann Prue; Robert Saisi; and Christopher, Beam - Director Edmund S. Muskie Archives, Bates College.
Senator Muskie was elected Governor in 1954 and served
two terms and then in 1956 he was elected to the Senate and ran unsuccessfully
for President in 1972. President Carter appointed him Secretary of State in
1980.
Many noted dignitaries were in attendance. Senator George
J. Mitchell was the keynote speaker. Also in attendance were
Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe as well as
Congressman John Baldacci.
The group was
welcomed at the dedication ceremony by Tom Carey, member of the Muskie
Memorial Committee, with the Invocation given by Father Alfred Jacques. J.
Harold McQuade, Shepard Lee and Chris Beam of the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at
Bates College also made remarks. The family of Edmund Muskie were also
recognized and thanked everyone for this great honor. After the unveiling of
the monument, Pastor Franklin J. Haines gave the benediction and throughout the
ceremony, the RAAPA Chorus directed by Judith Kuhn filled the air with music.
After the dedication ceremony, the gathering proceeded to
The
Pavilion at the Linnell Motel for a reception. When visiting the
Western Mountains of Maine, be sure to make one of your stops, The Muskie
