With the early morning sunshine rising over the landscape, there, ahead of us, appeared the head of "Angus" high above the trees and buildings of Bethel. |

As we approached, the landscape changed and the traffic and crowds grew. The small town of Bethel had been transformed into a wintry wonderland featuring "The World's Largest Snowman", "Angus King of the Mountain"! There he stood in all his glory with crowds of children and adults all coming out in the frosty morning air to celebrate this magical achievement. The community, young and old alike, were all there as the crew from "Good Morning America" was taping a short segment on Bethel's achievement to be aired in a spot at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 1999. The crowd joyously shouted, waved, and with great pride showed off Angus to the world!!! |

Later that morning Maine's governor, Angus King, whom "Angus, King of the Mountain" was named after, came to participate in the ceremony to honor the citizens of Bethel who achieved their goal and "made it" into the Guiness World Book of Records for the World's Largest Snowman. He stated he felt honored to have had the snowman named after him, but wondered if "Willie Melt" might not have been a more appropriate name! |

Visitors posed in front of "Angus" to have their pictures taken and to comment on the how this goal was accomplished while they feasted on hot cocoa and snowman cookies. Children climbed up the base of the snowman and slid down squealing in delight as the media took photos and did interviews to commemorate Bethel's achievement. |

Some interesting statistics about this snowman are as follows: Height 113 ft. & 7 inches
tall The snowman's hat was made by seventh graders at Telstar Middle School. His six-foot nose was made by local elementary school students and as a special touch, has the imprints of the student's hands. |

Speculation already exists as to how long Bethel may hold this record as Japan has indicated that they will attempt to build a larger, taller snowman. There was also a raffle as to when Angus would melt, which with our Maine weather, was anyone's guess. The official melt date was June 10, 1999. The raffle was divided by 22 winners. Even though Angus is long melted and just an exciting memory, if you get a chance to visit Bethel, Maine be sure to look for "Angus, King of the Mountain" memorabilia at the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce or visit the Chamber Web Site linked below. |
